Reader’s Review: Little Fires Everywhere

While my Goodreads calendar says it took me just under two weeks to read this book, the truth is I read ~190 pages in just two days. It took me a while to get started, but once I really got into the book, I couldn’t put it down.

The setting reminds me of a neighboring community, where all looks perfect from the outside. Yet, scandal and controversy are bubbling below the surface. While there were many characters to keep track of, Ng did an excellent job with character development. The characters were distinct, and easy to identify with. Different races, genders, socioeconomic status groups and sexual preferences were represented with sincerity. The characters appear genuine.

The plot took many different turns. It was well written, although predicatable at times. It could easily be developed into a screenplay or even miniseries.

The title could mean so many things…One could assume it is about the opening/ending scenes; I believe the author was much more symbolic in her writing. It was the perfect book to finish reading on Mother’s Day. The story illustrates motherhood from so many different perspectives. * I won’t go too far into this discussion, as to avoid spoilers!

My reason for rating this book four stars rather than five is that the ending started to become rushed. While I really love the story, I personally feel it is completely unfinished. I can only hope it is the first in a series!
